Random Topic #1: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

August2014BlogKH

I think the only constant in my desires for a career as a child were animals. I always wanted to do something that was related to animals.

Some of the first careers told to you as a child were:

  • Doctor
  • Teacher
  • Astronaut
  • Pilot
  • Veterinarian
  • Firefighter
  • Police Officer
  • President
  • Soldier
  • Actor/Actress
  • Writer
  • Artist

Of course, I wanted to be a veterinarian! I mean, it is the highest or near the highest paying career you can have that involves animals. I guess they really wanted us to shoot high! Go big or go home, eh?

So for a few years that was my default answer any time an adult asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. As a child, that was a common enough question. As an adult that does the asking or hearing others that ask, I wonder if we just do it to hear the cute answers they give us. I don’t think many adults take it seriously. I mean, we just sort of chuckle when they tell us that they want to be an astronaut or doctor, right?

Returning to the original topic, my answer to this question changed a few times. One that I remember particularly was that I wanted to own a pet treat business. I wanted a little shop where I could make homemade pet treats for pet owners! I’m pretty sure that I got this idea from watching something on Animal Planet, haha.

A little while later, I got it in my head that I wanted to be an animal trainer. I wanted to understand animal behavior and work with them in that respect. I’m sure I really had my heart fixed on working with more exotic animals, but I think I would’ve settled for dogs and cats.

I have to admit that I have many interests and passions. Throughout middle school and high school, the answer of what career I wanted changed a few times. They included animal behaviorist, environmentalist, writer, teacher, translator, and historian to name a few.

Because of my indecisiveness, I’m very glad that I decided not to start college right out of high school. That would have ended badly for me and my finances.

As an adult, I can now confidently say that I want to go to school to study English as my major with the hopes of working at a publishing company. I really want to be a driving force in releasing new books into the world. I want to make a difference in helping the book industry survive even as things convert digitally. I believe it is really important for young people to develop a passion for reading if not just an interest.

If not a publishing company for books, then I’ll probably seek out an online magazine or website to write for. I think I’ll be happy as long as I’m contributing in some form or fashion.

Here’s to hoping that works out!

So, as a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

  1. Hello, stranger, or am I the stranger … Hmm… not sure atm. lol. It’s been a while since last I commented on one of your posts so but I see that you have quite a few new ones so I guess I’m the stranger. Anywho. Nice to see you’re still writing. I’ve been doing the same along with quite a lot of other stuff. For some reason reading your writing relaxes me. Without the formality of the stuff I usually read I guess you could say It puts me at ease.

As for my choice as a child, it was Astronaut. My folks friends always use to call me scientist and I had a lot of books on space that i loved reading, but as I got older and became a bit more aware of my mortality I became a bit less interested in actually traveling to space, EVER. I guess as children we’re pure, unaffected by the world around us and that it means in the great scale of things.

As an adult who has been affected by such things. I have chosen a completely different path than i ever thought I would as a child or teen. For me now, my passion is a bit similar to yours. Not with the English and books, but the wanting for the younger generation to find a passion for reading as I have and so I work with some pretty awesome folks, that are my extended family on running a nerd culture website. I also work as a teacher for older teens and adults so that’s always fun and I do quite a lot of private business. I guess what I have learned over the years is that I don’t only want to do one thing and that I want to do so much more with this short amount of time I have allotted to me by the confines of mortality.

    • Well, I’m not too sure either! I figured it was just a matter of time before you popped in to comment. 🙂 And thank you for that! It makes me happy to hear that it puts you at ease. I hope it has a similar effect on others that read my writing. I try to keep it informal and fun. I don’t want reading my posts to be a chore.

Aw, an astronaut! Well, I don’t blame you one bit. Space can such a vastly fascinating thing to a child, along with most everything else. You’re right. There is still such an innocence and wide-eyed fascination for the world and all its possibilities.

That is awesome that you’re doing so many different things. I think that in time I will probably be the same way. There is just so much that I want to do, so many ways that I want to contribute, you know? And I’m sure you do.

So what is this nerd culture website? Link me up! 🙂

      • Haha, yeah. Thankfully, I have net access to WordPress while I’m at work. I have enough downtime that I can get on and reply to comments and such. I actually just started a new job! Three days ago. I’m the noob, but everyone’s nice. I’m an office administrator/receptionist for a title company. 🙂

Oh, that’s right! I kept trying to remember where I had first met you, and it was on Button Smashers! I used to follow it via WP, but y’all went to a full domain?

      • Congrats on the new Job. sounds like its a pretty nice gig.

You’d think that I’d have more time to reply to comments and such because I’m self employed, but in all actuality I’m multitasking so much on so many different devices that it’s only when I get one task done that I get to gather prospective and check other things like comments.

lol and yes we did meet via Buttonsmashers 😀 When we decided to take writing a bit more seriously we ended up buying a new domain and re-branding. We’re still working on growing the site, adding new members to our team, and so much more. Right now we’re booked for about 5 more conventions for the year 3 of which I’m supposed to attend. 😀 Traveling more because of my passion is something that I’m sure I’ll be doing for many years to come.

      • That’s great to hear that you all decided to move it to a domain! I’ve been considering doing that myself on and off, but until I am certain that I have time to dedicate to writing I’m going to hold off. It is something that I’d like to do, and also go to local conventions and such. I’m sure it’s exciting to be well-known and be attending the conventions! I have to say that I’m a little jealous! It looks like it’s a really great set up. I think I’d rather be part of a group like that when it comes to moving to a domain. Exciting!

      • yeah changing domains was one of the best things we’ve done on the site. Oh and you should go to as many conventions as you can. They are a wonderful experience that. As a fan of nerd culture its comparable to living all your life in a country where you barely speak the language and then visiting home where everyone understands you and you understand them. It’s simply beautiful.

PS when you decide you want to make a move, feel free to leave an application on our site. I’ll personally give it my approval so that the admins pay special attention to it.

      • I’m glad to hear it’s doing well! Also, I’ll be going to as many conventions as I can. So far I’ve only been to two, but one was more a video game contest and the other was Video Games Live which is more the concert. I do have plans to go to Classic Game Fest next month though! I’m super excited to go to my home country lol.

I will definitely leave an application. I would love to write on Buttonsmashers. 😀 And thank you! Although I can’t yet say that my writing deserves special attention ha-ha. I appreciate it.

      • lol I can’t wait to read about your experiences at the conventions you do attend. I’ve never heard of Classic Game Fest but it sounds like PAX, which two editors from the site will be attending later this year. I personal dream is to attend every convention that this world has to offer in every country. To basically spend each month in a new country, experiencing the world and writing about it all :3

As for if your writing deserve the special attention, YES. it certainly does. There are very few blogs that I actually follow on WordPress and less than that, that I read and comment on. I’ve been following your writing since you were writing on Geeky ‘n Girly, and as I mentioned before it’s relaxing for me. You also have a few similar views as I do on nerd culture and so my endorsement of your application won’t be biased, you deserve it 😉

      • CGF is all about the old school games! I grew up on them so I’m excited. I put a link to its website in my PS4 post so you should check it out. I seriously can’t wait.

Going to every convention ever is quite a task but you seem like the kind of guy to do it! I’ll be happy with one or two a year, ha-ha. I’m not hard to please.

About your endorsement, thank you so much. It really means a lot to me that you appreciate my writing that much. I was even bragging to my boyfriend that you complimented my writing and offered your stamp of approval. I’d love to be a part of a website like Buttonsmashers so I’ll be considering that for sure. ^.^

      • Yeah! I stopped using my work computer after a while and went back to using my phone. It actually works really well on Android. — Yes, do read some of the other stuff. I really haven’t posted much because I was moving and job hunting and moving more.. And I move into my new apartment tomorrow! Super excited.

Also, I showed that to my fellow and he was like, “Nah..” And laughed. He likes to give me a hard time. But no, seriously I appreciate you following and commenting and all. 🙂

      • lol I’m sure he’s just teasing you. I have the android app on my tab, but sadly it’s never really attached to wifi much to save battery for more manga reading time. Anywho keep writing, and I shall keep reading…. 😉

  2. Growing up with a lot of sci-fi shows I wanted to be an inventor. Create gizmos and gadgets that would be used on something like Star Trek. As I got older I found that math and physics really bored me and I got more into my writing classes in college. I usually loved having long discussions and debates about all the things I found interesting, so putting it to paper was always enjoyable. As of now I just really enjoy writing and am hoping that one day I’ll eventually get to publish something of my own in the creative field! A veterinarian was definitely a nice ambition to have when you were younger!

I wish you luck on your endeavors with the route you’re taking now as it’s definitely admirable. While society may be moving onto the digital era, nothing feels better than a hard copy of something you really enjoy reading!

    • Ooo, an inventor. I don’t think I’ve heard anyone say that’s what they wanted to be as a kid. That’s really interesting actually. And imaginative! 🙂 Math was my weakest subject through school. I was always great at writing and art though, and I’ve always enjoyed it.

I also want to get things published. Notice that’s plural, ha-ha. I’m ambitious. That’s sort of a side goal to pursuing a career in the field of publishing and such. If all else fails, I’ll simply be a good old fashion English teacher.

And you’re right! Nothing is quite like buying a new book, bringing it home, opening it to that new book smell, and turning crisp pages. Even if I do have a Kindle and its convenient. Nothing beats the real deal. 😀

      • Absolutely! While I hate the smell of old books, I dunno why, the feel of something physical that you can flip through is irreplaceable!
Any sneak peaks on what you want to work on? 😉
